Leave it up to Miami to turn a sophisticated art weekend into a popular music gathering. We noticed last year during Art Basel, something was off, the weekend was not just about getting wasted at galleries. More and more people we ran into this year were just in the area for parties and concerts. Nothing is wrong with that, why wouldn’t promoters capitalize on celebrities wanting to be in town for multiple events. The problem starts when you advertise these events and try and associate them with Basel weekend. That’s that part we just can’t understand. There is a shit load of major EDM and Hip Hop shows going down around the city, probably more than actual art showcases.
Miami really did turn Art Basel into Memorial Day Weekend.
What do the artist think? The ones that wait all year for Art Basel to showcase their work. Wynwood has already been taken from them, now Art Basel, where are the artist going to go next? A couple artist we spoke to mentioned that some big changes could be coming for Miami Art Basel 2017, they are well aware of what the weekend has become. Culture vulture’s are always on the prowl, looking to turn a trend into some profit. That could just be the cycle of life though, underground to popular to lame and repeat. We want the old Art Basel back. We want to get drunk, stumble into expensive galleries and talk art with random rich people. Not get passed a mixtape when walking around Wynwood, that’s when you know it’s gone too far.
That’s our rant for the day, what do you think about Art Basel Miami? Let us know in the comments, maybe we are tripping and it’s still one of the best weekends to be in Miami.
